barely setup
Setup asks a few questions and saves your answers to ~/.barely/config.json. You can change them later in the app under Settings › Docker, or see Config.
It installs Barely into ~/.barely, puts the Barely app in ~/Applications and starts your 30-day trial, see Licence.
It also connects Docker to Barely:
- Registers a Docker context called
barely. Setup asks whether to make it the current one. If you say yes, thedockercommand uses barely from then on. - Points
/var/run/docker.sockat barely. Apps that ignore Docker contexts connect here, so they use barely too. Setup asks first, and this step needs your password. - Sets
DOCKER_HOSTin your shell profile. This stops Docker Desktop switchingdockeraway from barely when it starts. Setup asks first. The answer defaults to yes when Docker Desktop is installed, and no otherwise.
To take every default without being asked:
barely setup -defaults
Questions
Can I change my answers later?
Yes. Each of setup's three Docker changes has its own switch in the app under Settings › Docker. Turning one off puts back what was there before setup, see Config.
Why does setup ask for my password?
Only to point /var/run/docker.sock at Barely, which needs it. Setup asks before that step, and you can say no.
Can I keep Docker Desktop?
Yes. You can keep Docker Desktop installed and run both. They don't share anything: each has its own images, containers and volumes. See Alongside Docker Desktop.
